Organisation
ActiveArchives is a project of the
Berne University of the Arts BUA and the
Swiss Institute for Art Research SIAR. ActiveArchives is supported by the
Federal Office of Cultural Affairs as a part of the
Sitemapping.ch project.
Participating Institutions
The Berne University of the Arts BUA is an independent department of the Berne University of Applied Sciences. The BUA course for conservation and restoration offers four areas for in-depth study. In 1999 Modern Materials was added to the traditional specialisations for Painting and Sculpture; Graphics, Typography and Photography; and Architecture and Interior Design. To meet the comprehensive requirements of modern and contemporary art, the Modern Media specialisation was added in autumn 2000. The latest two fields of specialisation have since been combined to form Modern Materials and Media MMM. The studio for MMM shares its media infrastructure with the ActiveArchives project, thus facilitating useful and necessary synergies for art technological research.
The Swiss Institute for Art Research SIAR, which was founded in 1951, is an internationally active research and documentation centre with emphasis on art in Switzerland. The Institute has headquarters in Zurich, with a branch at the University of Lausanne. Characteristic of the Institute is its combination of art history (an arts discipline) with art technology (a sciences discipline). The Institute is recognised and supported financially by the Swiss Federal Government. Additional funds are provided by the Canton and the City of Zurich, by other cantons and communities, as well as by private contributors. The Institute, in co-operation with museums, universities, and other institutions, realises research and publication projects. Generally the art research and art technology departments are involved in these projects. The library (which is open to the public), the documentation section, and the photo archives offer significant research sources.
